Zambia’s Growing Community in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is home to one of the largest Southern African diaspora communities, with an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Zambians currently living across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Demographic studies and United Nations population estimates indicate that approximately 30,000 to 31,000 Zambian-born citizens reside in the UK.

However, community leaders and diaspora organisations believe the broader Zambian community is significantly larger when second-generation descendants, dual nationals and individuals of Zambian heritage are taken into account. These estimates place the total population closer to 40,000 people.

Over the years, Zambians in the UK have established vibrant communities that contribute to British society in sectors such as healthcare, education, business, engineering, information technology and public service.

The diaspora also plays an important role in supporting development back home through remittances, investment initiatives and charitable activities.

The Zambian community remains closely connected through various cultural, professional and social organisations that promote networking, mentorship and the preservation of Zambian traditions and values.

These platforms provide opportunities for members to share experiences, support newcomers and strengthen ties between Zambia and the United Kingdom.

As the community continues to grow, it remains an important bridge between the two countries, fostering cultural exchange while contributing to economic and social development on both sides.
