The case of United States–based Zambian vlogger Ethel Edwards in which she has been accused of seditious practice and hate speech will be heard today (November 27).
Edwards, 42, is facing four counts of allegations that she used several social media platforms between February 1, 2023, and February 28, 2025, to publish material deemed seditious.
Authorities say she disseminated hate speech through a Facebook page named Dominic Phiri, another page called Zambia Top Updates, and a TikTok account titled Trending Stories Wthros, with some posts allegedly targeting President Hakainde Hichilema.
She was arrested two months ago upon arrival from the United States and has remained in custody since then. Edwards previously pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Webster Milumbe.
When the matter was called for trial, state prosecutor Voster Munsaka informed the court that the defence had formally approached the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) to initiate plea-bargain discussions. He requested an adjournment to allow the talks to progress.
A defence lawyer confirmed that negotiations with the NPA were underway and required additional time to conclude.
“What my learned friend said before the record is indeed the position. The defence engaged the National Prosecutions Authority for a plea bargain which is being discussed and is underway. As stated, we seek an adjournment to November 27 in order for us to get a report and status of the same,” the lawyer said.
Magistrate Milumbe granted the request and set November 27 as the next court date.
“You are remanded in custody,” he told Edwards, who remains detained and has not been granted bail.
