Hichilema Dismisses Witchcraft Claims, Urges Focus on Development Amid Lungu Burial Debate

President Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed claims linking him to witchcraft, questioning the logic behind allegations that he would seek to use human body parts for ritual purposes. Speaking amid renewed public debate, the Head of State said such accusations are unfounded and inconsistent with his personal beliefs.

“I don’t believe in witchcraft. What would I do with anybody’s body parts?” President Hichilema remarked, adding that if he subscribed to such practices, he would have resorted to them during periods of political persecution.

He pointed out that he had both the means and opportunity in the past but never entertained such actions, underscoring his rejection of the claims.

The remarks come at a time when tensions have resurfaced over the burial arrangements of former president Edgar Lungu. The issue has drawn widespread attention following a postmortem conducted on Lungu’s remains after the government assumed custody of the body.

The development has fueled speculation and revived conspiracy theories circulating in some sections of society.

President Hichilema reiterated that the late former president should be laid to rest in Zambia, stressing that this is in accordance with the country’s laws and traditions.

He emphasized the importance of handling the matter with dignity and respect, while also ensuring that legal frameworks are upheld.

Beyond the burial dispute, the President used the opportunity to call on citizens to remain focused on productivity and innovation as Zambia advances towards a 24-hour economy.

He urged Zambians to channel their energy into economic activities that will drive national development, rather than being distracted by unverified claims and misinformation.

Observers note that allegations of witchcraft, though often dismissed by authorities, continue to influence public discourse in parts of the country. The latest remarks by President Hichilema appear aimed at countering such narratives while reinforcing a message of rationality and progress.

As the debate surrounding Lungu’s burial continues, the government faces the dual challenge of addressing public concerns while maintaining order and adherence to the law. For now, the President’s stance is clear: the focus should remain on unity, development, and respect for both the living and the deceased.
