Grade 7 Pupil Dies Following Dispute Over Relationship in Chama

A 19-year-old Grade Seven pupil from Kombazi Primary School in Chama District, Eastern Province, has died in an incident linked to a dispute over a relationship with a fellow pupil.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the matter, stating that it occurred on 20 November 2025 in Ng’anjo Chibwato Village, Chief Kambombo. An inquiry file has since been opened.

According to police, the pupil, identified as Sylvester Chibanga, had been in a relationship with a 16-year-old classmate. Authorities say the girl’s father—who also teaches at the school—was opposed to the relationship, a position shared by both families.

Residents spoken to on condition of anonymity said the pupils had been close for some time despite objections from elders.

Commissioner Mweemba said the family of the deceased has been advised to proceed with burial, as no foul play is suspected.

Community members have expressed sadness over the incident, calling for strengthened guidance and counselling services in schools to help young people navigate emotional and social pressures.
