GOVERNMENT TO EVACUATE ZAMBIAN FAMILY FROM IRAQ’S KURDISTAN REGION

Government has begun arrangements to evacuate a Zambian family of five living in the Kurdistan region, an autonomous territory of Iraq, following escalating military activity in parts of the Middle East.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe told Parliament that the evacuation is being coordinated through Zambia’s mission in Cairo due to the deteriorating security situation in the region.

Mr Haimbe said government is also working to establish the whereabouts and status of a Zambian national believed to be residing in Iran.

He, however, assured the House that government has not received any confirmed reports of injuries or loss of life involving Zambian nationals as a result of the ongoing hostilities.

“This position is based on updates from our missions in Egypt, Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, although the situation remains fluid,” he said.

Mr Haimbe said some Zambians in the region have experienced temporary travel disruptions due to precautionary airspace closures and heightened security measures.

He explained that Zambian diplomatic missions are actively providing guidance, consular support and coordinating assistance to ensure the safety of citizens where necessary.

According to the minister, preparations are underway to facilitate the safe transit of the affected family through the nearest viable corridor, depending on security assessments.

“I wish to assure the House that the matter is being handled with urgency and sensitivity,” Mr Haimbe said.

He added that Zambian nationals in the affected areas include students, professionals, private sector workers and members of the diplomatic community.

Mr Haimbe also said the government of the United Arab Emirates has been offering support and temporary accommodation to stranded passengers, helping to ease the impact of travel disruptions.

In response to the evolving security situation, the ministry has issued a travel and security advisory to Zambians living in or visiting the Gulf region.

Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid areas near military installations or key government infrastructure and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

They have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas and maintain contact with the nearest Zambian mission.

Mr Haimbe said government will continue monitoring developments and provide further guidance if necessary.

He reiterated that Zambia remains a peace loving and non aligned country that does not take sides in international conflicts but supports peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law and the United Nations Charter.
