Fashion Sakala’s Journey: From Zambia to European Football and Saudi Pro League Stardom

Fashion Sakala (born 14 March 1997) is a Zambian professional forward who plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha and the Zambia national team.

Sakala began his senior career in Zambia with Nchanga Rangers before moving to Zanaco, where he won the Zambia Super League title in 2016.

His performances soon earned him a move abroad, and in February 2017 he signed a three-year deal with Russian giants Spartak Moscow.

However, he did not break into the first team, instead gaining experience with Spartak-2 in the Russian second tier.

In July 2018, Sakala transferred to Belgian side KV Oostende, where he developed into a consistent attacking threat.

Over three seasons, he scored 31 goals in 102 appearances, establishing himself as a reliable forward in European football.

His progress continued with a move to Scotland in 2021, when he joined Rangers on a free transfer. At Ibrox, he enjoyed some of the most successful moments of his club career, including winning the Scottish Cup, scoring 24 goals in 91 appearances, and marking his spell with standout performances such as a hat-trick against Motherwell.

He also featured in the UEFA Champions League, making his debut against Liverpool in 2022.

In August 2023, Sakala joined Al-Fayha in Saudi Arabia on a two-year contract. He quickly became an important figure for the club, and in January 2025 he made history by becoming Al-Fayha’s all-time top scorer in the Saudi Pro League, surpassing previous record holders Ronnie Fernandez and Danilo Asprilla.

On the international stage, Sakala has represented the Zambia national football team across multiple levels. At youth level, he starred for the Zambia U20 side that won the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, scoring three goals, and later impressed at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup with four goals as Zambia reached the quarter-finals. He also earned a brief appearance for the U23 team in 2019.

Sakala made his senior debut in September 2017 in a World Cup qualifier against Algeria, a match that ended with him being sent off after two yellow cards.

Despite the difficult start, he remained part of the national setup and was later included in Zambia’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and again for the 2025 tournament under coach Avram Grant.
