President Hakainde Hichilema has urged young men to reject sexual violence and instead approach relationships with respect and honesty by properly proposing love to women they are interested in.
Speaking when he officiated at the 2026 National Youth Indaba in Lusaka on Friday, President Hichilema advised male youths to respect their female counterparts and avoid acts of rape.
He said young men who are interested in women should express their intentions respectfully rather than resorting to violence.
“You male youths, don’t rape your fellow youths who are women. If you want her, propose love properly. Don’t rape her,” President Hichilema said.
The Head of State also cautioned older men against marrying young girls, stressing that girls should be allowed to remain in school and pursue their education.
He noted that early marriages rob girls of opportunities to develop their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
“You men, especially older men, do not take young girls into early marriages. Allow them to stay in school,” he said.
President Hichilema added that government policies such as free education were aimed at ensuring that children, particularly girls, remained in school and had a chance to build a better future.
Meanwhile, the President urged youths to reject corruption, warning that the vice deprives citizens of resources and opportunities meant to improve their livelihoods.
He said corruption undermines development and denies young people the benefits that come from national resources.
President Hichilema emphasised that the youth have a critical role to play in building a transparent and accountable society by refusing to participate in corrupt practices.
He encouraged them to uphold integrity and contribute positively to the country’s development.
The National Youth Indaba brings together young people from across the country to discuss issues affecting them and explore ways of enhancing their participation in national development.
