LUSAKA — Lusaka Showgrounds was last Saturday transformed into a colourful meeting place of cultures as more than 30 diplomatic missions, high commissions and international organisations converge for the 2026 Diplomatic Fun Fair.
The event, which started at 09:00 hours, was held under the theme “Zambia Moves You: Connecting Cultures and Inspiring the Future” and was open to members of the public free of charge.
The annual gathering provides Zambians and visitors with an opportunity to experience the cultures of different countries without leaving Lusaka, through music, dance, food, fashion, crafts, storytelling and other cultural presentations.
The participation of diplomatic missions gives the fair a distinctly international character, while also providing an opportunity for Zambia to showcase its own cultural heritage and tourism potential to the diplomatic and international community.
Traditional and contemporary performances formed an important part of the programme, with participating countries presenting aspects of their national identities through folk dances, music, fashion and artistic displays.
Food was also one of the major attractions, with visitors able to sample different international cuisines alongside traditional dishes and products.
For families, the fair provides children’s activities designed to make the event both educational and entertaining, while craft exhibitions offer visitors an opportunity to see and purchase products reflecting the artistic traditions of different participating countries.
Beyond entertainment, the Diplomatic Fun Fair provides a platform for cultural diplomacy. The presence of diplomats and representatives of international organisations allows ordinary Zambians to interact with people from different parts of the world in an informal setting.
Such interaction can help promote greater understanding between communities and demonstrate that diplomacy extends beyond government meetings and formal negotiations.
The fair also came at a time when Zambia was seeking to strengthen tourism, investment and international engagement as part of its broader economic development ambitions.
By bringing different cultures together in one location, the event creates opportunities for local businesses, artisans, performers and tourism operators to engage with an international audience.
The emphasis on local tourism and community participation also complements the Grow Zambia Agenda, which places greater attention on expanding economic activity, creating opportunities and positioning Zambia to benefit more from its cultural and tourism assets.
For Zambia’s diplomatic community, the event provides an opportunity to deepen people-to-people relations while showcasing the country’s hospitality.
The theme, “Zambia Moves You”, therefore carries significance beyond the entertainment value of the fair. It reflects an attempt to use culture as a bridge between Zambia and the wider international community and to encourage greater appreciation of the diversity that exists within the global diplomatic family.
The Lusaka Showgrounds remained a hive of activity throughout the day as families, young people, diplomats, tourists and other members of the public moved from one cultural pavilion to another.
For many visitors, the attraction was the opportunity to encounter several different cultures in a single day. For participating missions, it was an opportunity to share their traditions while learning more about Zambia and its people.
The 2026 Diplomatic Fun Fair ultimately presented diplomacy in a more accessible form — through food, music, art, culture and human interaction — while reinforcing Lusaka’s role as a meeting point for Zambia and the wider world.
