DIASPORA LEADERS SHINE AS ZAMBIAN CHIEFTAINESS AND MPEZENI PRINCE MEET UK ENVOY

A UK-based Zambian chieftainess and healthcare specialist recently joined a Mpezeni royal prince in meeting Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, in a gathering that underscored the growing impact of the Zambian diaspora.

Chieftainess Cynthia Mulayas Oba-Williams, a haem-oncology nurse specialist, and Prince Zwangendaba KaMakhabaniso Jere of the Mpezeni royal establishment paid a courtesy call on Zambia’s High Commissioner to the UK, Macenje Mazoka, during a recent visit.

The meeting celebrated the contributions of Zambians living abroad, with particular emphasis on philanthropic and professional efforts that continue to make a meaningful difference back home.

Chieftainess Cynthia, who serves as an executive member of Zambians Together UK as well as the Association of Zambian Nurses in the UK, has distinguished herself both professionally and through community service.

In recognition of her work, she was awarded the UK Zambians Excellence Professional Award in 2020.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed pride in having met President Hakainde Hichilema during his visit to London in November 2021, describing the encounter as both inspiring and affirming of her commitment to national development.

Over the years, Chieftainess Cynthia has spearheaded a number of fundraising initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities in Zambia.

Her efforts have included mobilising resources for the Cancer Diseases Hospital during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, providing assistance during the cholera outbreak, and raising funds to support a student’s education at Evelyn Hone College.

Beyond Zambia, her philanthropic reach has extended to empowerment programmes in countries such as Ivory Coast and Nigeria, reflecting a broader commitment to African development.

In recognition of her leadership and service, she was conferred with a chieftaincy title by King M.O.B. Braimoh JP, the Clanhead of the Central Uneme Communities in Edo State, Nigeria.

The meeting in the United Kingdom served not only as a moment of recognition but also as a reaffirmation of the vital role that Zambians in the diaspora continue to play in supporting development initiatives and strengthening national identity abroad.
