More than 200 underprivileged children drawn from several care centres were treated to a memorable Christmas lunch at Chaisa Catholic Church, thanks to the generosity of Diaspora Insurance and Kwela Trust.
The annual festive event, which has become a hallmark of Kwela Trust’s community outreach, brought together children, volunteers, church members and partners in a celebration marked by food, song and gratitude.
The children were served a sumptuous meal comprising rice, chicken, fresh salads and a bun, accompanied by Fanta drinks, giving many of them a rare and joyful Christmas treat.
Kwela Trust director Laura Miti expressed heartfelt appreciation to Diaspora Insurance, a United Kingdom-based organisation, for sponsoring the 2025 Children’s Christmas Lunch.
She explained that Kwela Trust was nominated to benefit from Diaspora Insurance’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award, a process overseen by the insurer’s board of directors.
“We are deeply grateful to Diaspora Insurance for this gesture and for believing in the work that Kwela Trust has been doing since 2014,” Miti said. “This support has enabled us to once again put smiles on the faces of children who need it most.”
During the event, the children broke into song and chants, repeatedly thanking Diaspora Insurance for making their Christmas special.
Their joyful expressions underscored the impact of the initiative, which goes beyond a single meal to offer dignity, inclusion and hope.
Miti also paid tribute to the many individuals and groups who ensured the event’s success. She commended the cooking and serving teams for their dedication, noting the impressive turnout, particularly among young volunteers.
Special praise was extended to the Chaisa Catholic Church mothers for their organisation and commitment, as well as to Zarina Geloo, who has consistently opened her home for food preparations over the years.
“Hosting us year after year is not something we take for granted. You are truly a rock,” Miti said.
She further thanked all those who made Christmas contributions in advance, explaining that remaining resources would support the Chilanga Feeding Programme, extending the spirit of giving beyond Christmas Day.
The 2025 lunch marked Kwela Trust’s 12th Christmas feeding event since its inception, with plans already underway for “lunch number 13” next year. As the curtains came down on this year’s celebration, one message was clear: through partnerships like that with Diaspora Insurance, the tradition of sharing hope and nourishment with vulnerable children remains strong.
