It is possible to rent cars or 4x4s in Zambia but you do need to plan your route carefully as pick-ups and drop-offs are generally only possible in major centres like Lusaka and Livingstone. Here are a few pointers to help you on your way:
- Some of the major international car rental companies have offices in Lusaka at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. It is best to book your vehicle model and type as far in advance as possible as there are limited numbers available.
- 4×4 rental companies mostly have offices in Lusaka and Livingstone. If you want to collect or return a vehicle at another site, an extra charge will generally be levied.
- It is best to opt for the most comprehensive insurance coverage available to you if possible as conditions in Zambia are unpredictable. Full coverage will give you peace of mind in case of damage, accident or theft.
- Be mindful that companies generally charge to refuel so aim to return your vehicle with a full tank of petrol or diesel.
- Conduct a thorough inspection of the entire vehicle – including spare tyres – with a company representative and make notes and take photographs before you set off.
- Do not rely on GPS. Take back-up maps and directions in case signal is lost.
