BODY OF ZAMBIAN PUPIL KILLED IN CANADA ARRIVES HOME FOR BURIAL

The body of 12 year-old Abel Mwansa Jr, a Zambian pupil who was killed in a mass shooting in Canada, arrived in Zambia yesterday ahead of his burial.

Abel lost his life on February 10, 2026 during a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada. Seven other people were killed in the attack, while 25 were injured.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, together with Corry Van Gaal, Chargé d’Affaires of Canada to the Republic of Zambia, received the body at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on February 28, 2026.

They were joined by Bishop Steven Nkhata, who represented the family, and other relatives.

Speaking at the airport, Mr Haimbe conveyed Government’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of continued support during the difficult period.

He said the Government of the Republic of Zambia had provided the necessary logistical assistance to the family and worked closely with the Canadian authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Abel’s remains.

Ms Van Gaal expressed regret over the tragic incident and extended heartfelt sympathies to the family. She wished them strength and comfort as they prepare to lay their loved one to rest.

Details of the repatriation and burial arrangements were confirmed in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Eva Hantontola Chanda.

According to the statement, burial is expected to take place on Monday, March 2, 2026 in Kitwe on the Copperbelt.
