Former diasporan Bina Nkwazi is a celebrated Zambian vocalist whose powerful and distinctive voice has taken her from the music stages of Zambia to some of Europe’s most prestigious jazz and world music festivals.
A talented jazz and world music artist, Nkwazi rose to prominence internationally after moving to Finland in the mid-1990s.
Her commanding stage presence and explosive vocal style quickly attracted attention, establishing her as one of the Zambian artists to make a significant mark on the European music scene.
Her breakthrough came through performances at major festivals, including the renowned Pori Jazz Festival in Finland. She subsequently built an impressive career performing with some of Europe’s leading jazz ensembles and big bands.
Among the musicians and orchestras with whom she has collaborated are the UMO Jazz Orchestra, Manhattan Big Band and Trio Töykeät. These collaborations allowed her to showcase the richness of her African musical heritage while working within jazz, world music and contemporary musical traditions.
Nkwazi has also released solo and collaborative recordings, including Bina and As Sure As the Sun. Her music has earned her recognition among audiences interested in the fusion of African sounds with international jazz influences.
But Nkwazi’s story extends beyond the concert stage.
She is also known as Her Royal Highness Queen (Mokola) Bina Nkwazi of the Mukuni Chiefdom in Zambia. She is married to Munokalya Siloka Mukuni, the traditional leader of the Toka Leya people and Chief Mukuni, whose chiefdom is associated with the Livingstone area of Southern Province.
Her position has given her a distinctive place in Zambian public life, bringing together two worlds in which she has made her mark: music and traditional leadership.
As an artist, she has carried aspects of Zambian and African culture onto international stages. As Queen of the Mukuni Chiefdom, she is part of a traditional institution with deep historical and cultural significance in Southern Zambia.
Her journey is therefore an unusual one. From the jazz clubs and festival stages of Finland and other parts of Europe to the cultural traditions of the Mukuni Chiefdom, Bina Nkwazi has built a life that bridges music, culture and royalty.
Her career also illustrates the ability of Zambian artists to find international audiences while retaining strong connections to their cultural roots.
