An Open Letter Calling for Stronger Engagement Between the Government and the Zambian Diaspora

Dear Government of the Republic of Zambia,

I write as a proud Zambian living in the diaspora, deeply connected to my homeland despite the distance that separates us. Like many fellow Zambians abroad, I remain invested in the progress, prosperity and future of our nation.

The Zambian diaspora represents a significant resource that can contribute meaningfully to national development.

Across the world, Zambians are excelling in various fields including medicine, engineering, education, finance, technology, business and research.

Many have acquired valuable skills, experience and networks that can help drive Zambia’s economic growth and social transformation.

However, despite our willingness to contribute, many members of the diaspora often feel disconnected from national decision making processes and development initiatives.

There is a need for stronger and more structured engagement between the Government and Zambians living abroad.

We commend the efforts that have been made over the years to recognize the importance of the diaspora. Yet there remains considerable room for improvement. Greater communication, consultation and collaboration would help unlock the full potential of Zambians abroad.

We would welcome regular dialogue platforms where diaspora communities can engage directly with government officials on matters affecting national development. Such platforms could provide opportunities for sharing ideas, investment opportunities, policy proposals and solutions to challenges facing our country.

Furthermore, there is a need for clearer frameworks that encourage diaspora investment. Many Zambians abroad are interested in investing in agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, real estate and other sectors but often encounter information gaps and bureaucratic hurdles.

Simplifying procedures and creating dedicated support mechanisms would encourage greater participation.

The Government could also consider establishing stronger diaspora desks within embassies and relevant ministries to facilitate communication and provide assistance to citizens abroad. These offices could serve as important bridges between the diaspora and the nation.

Equally important is the recognition of the contributions that Zambians abroad already make through remittances, charitable initiatives, skills transfers and community development projects.

These contributions support families, create opportunities and contribute to the country’s economy.

As patriotic citizens, we do not seek special treatment. Rather, we seek partnership. We seek a relationship built on mutual respect, trust and a shared commitment to Zambia’s development.

The challenges facing our nation require the collective efforts of all Zambians, whether at home or abroad.

The diaspora is not separate from Zambia. We are part of Zambia. Our hearts remain rooted in the communities where we were born, raised and educated. We celebrate Zambia’s achievements and share in its challenges.

I therefore respectfully call upon the Government to strengthen engagement with the diaspora and create more avenues for meaningful participation in national development. Together, we can build a more prosperous, inclusive and globally competitive Zambia.

May God bless Zambia and all her people.

Yours faithfully,

A Concerned Zambian in the Diaspora
