UPND Pushes for Ex-Diplomat Emmanuel Mwamba’s Extradition from the US

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has intensified efforts to secure the return of former diplomat Emmanuel Mwamba, whom it describes as a fugitive from justice.

The party has formally engaged the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and written to several international bodies, including the United States, urging them to assist in facilitating Mr Mwamba’s extradition to Zambia.

UPND media director Mark Simuuwe said the party is concerned by what he termed “deliberate attempts” by Mr Mwamba to evade the Zambian legal process while making “false claims” of political persecution abroad.

Mr Simuuwe revealed that the UPND has formally written to the United States Embassy in Lusaka, informing it that Mr Mwamba is “not a genuine asylum seeker but a fugitive from justice,” and requesting his return to Zambia under international law.

“We have also written to the European Union and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),” he said. “Our correspondence highlights the misuse of asylum mechanisms and calls for Mr Mwamba to be returned to Zambia to face lawful prosecution.”

According to Mr Simuuwe, Mr Mwamba left Zambia of his own accord and was neither placed under house arrest nor stripped of his passport, as he has claimed in statements circulated online. He described these claims as “politically motivated” and intended to mislead both local and international audiences.

“Zambia remains a democratic nation that upholds the rule of law,” he said. “All citizens, regardless of political affiliation, are subject to the legal process and must answer before the courts when required.”

Mr Mwamba, who serves as information and media chairperson for a faction of the Patriotic Front (PF), is currently on a bench warrant in two separate cases before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court.
